Science Experiments

Our highly qualified and very much loved science teacher visits camp on a regular basis.  This woman is ultimately responsible for the creation of Camp Doodles.  Without her, Camp Doodles would not exist.  Can you guess who it is?

Bettina Hughes, longtime parent & science teacher at Drake High School (and previous teacher in Istanbul, Turkey) shares her love for science and her love for children by volunteering her time at camp. Bettina is the mother of David and Jeremy, the two young men who founded Camp Doodles.  Thanks mom! :-)

Our Science experiments range from fairly simple activities such as creating candles, hunting for mushrooms and understanding the process involved, to more complex questions like "Why is the sky blue?".

All experiments and nature walks are deemed very safe, and highly fun by our scientist, her children and the rest of the camp staff!  Don't miss out on the opportunity to meet the famous Bettina Hughes!

Talent Time

Talent Time is a very popular program developed by one of our staff members to allow children to express themselves through a variety of different talents.

Talents range from singing to most flexible to funniest noise to hula hooping to longest 1-footed hopper.  As you can see, some are very "typical" talents like singing and others are a bit on the goofy, "not-so-typical" side.

We strive to maintain a very caring, all-inclusive environment at Camp Doodles.  While naturally, "put downs" are not accepted, the ambiance surrounding camp is such that we rarely need to remind anyone to respect everyone. It is a given.

Every child who performs a talent is publicly applauded for being brave enough to participate and then is asked to sit on the stage alongside the other "performers" with their eyes closed.  A staff members randomly places their hand over the head of the participants to judge the crowds support.  When the staff member has decided who received the most camper support, all participants are asked to open their eyes and the crowd gives them a loud round of applause while the selected person or group chooses from our prize box.

Campers not only feel comfortable participating in "Talent Time", they remind us constantly which talents we should add to our camper repertoire.

Choice Time

Imagine if you were between age 5 and 11 and you had to spend your entire day, everyday, choosing what to do, with nobody giving you any guidance or support.  We are proud to offer a good balance where our campers participate in a wide array of fun programs during the morning, have free-play during lunch-time and then are given an assortment of neat activities to choose from for the afternoon.

This allows our children to experience new projects and activities in an accepting environment, have the chance to socialize with friends, and lets them have control over part of the day's schedule.  What more can one ask for?
